When finding solutions for a broken tooth, a dental crown may be just what the dentist ordered! Our team in Austin, Texas, can discuss the procedure of getting a dental crown so you will better understand the process during your next appointment!

How do dental crowns work?

Dental crowns, sometimes called “tooth caps” or just “caps,” are restorations that protect and strengthen damaged teeth. They are designed to fit over the entire portion of a natural tooth above the gum line to restore shape, size, strength, and appearance. A dental crown is fabricated from various materials such as porcelain, ceramic, gold, or metal alloys, though porcelain and ceramic are the most commonly preferred as they mimic the look of natural tooth enamel and can be made to match the patient’s smile.

Crowns/Bridge before and after treatment

Getting a dental crown at our office typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, Dr. Christopher Naranjo will prepare the tooth, removing decay or damage. He then shapes it to accommodate the final crown. A gel impression of the prepared tooth will be taken and sent to a dental lab, where the custom-made crown is created. In the meantime, a temporary dental crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth.

At the second visit, usually two or three weeks later, the temporary crown is removed by our dentist, and the new restoration is put in place with permanent bonding materials. Patients are given aftercare instructions on extending their new crown’s longevity for years of protection and coverage!
